Volkswagen T-Roc: first contact with the 1.6 TDI with 115 hp

The Volkswagen T-Roc finally available with the 115 horsepower 1.6 diesel. Our impressions in the first contact on the roads around Verona.

The German crossover is being imposed thanks to a breaking design that is removed from the older sisters Tiguan and Touareg but without leaving the stylistic standards of Volkswagen. Great proportions, modern look concentrated in 4,234 mm of length, 1,819 mm width excluding the exterior mirrors and 1,573 mm height. The wheelbase is 2,590 mm. It is declined in eleven body colors that can be associated with four different colors for the roof.

Modernity is also found in the interior, dominated by the color of the finishes, the brightness given by the large front glass area and the two infotainment monitors. The driving position is raised, the space on board is not missing especially in front, while behind the third passenger, especially if adult, could be a bit ‘tight. The boot capacity is 445 liters, but you get 1,290 liters by knocking down the rear seatbacks in the 40/60 module.

The T-Roc is the first SUV in its class available with fully digital instrumentation: the new generation Active Info Display (standard in the Advance equipment), which replicates most of the information in the central display. From the 8-inch touch screen you can manage numerous car functions and enjoy the services offered by Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Mirror Link.

In terms of driving assistance systems, there are also front and rear parking sensors, adaptive Cruis Control with pedestrian recognition system and emergency braking, active Lane Assist, as well as Park Pilot to facilitate parking maneuvers.


Volkswagen T-Roc: the 115 horsepower TDI 1.6 diesel engine

The 1.6 TDI is a great classic of the Volkswagen motor range , updated with SCR catalytic converter to be long in compliance with the increasingly stringent emission standards with Euro 6d-TEMP approval.

The four-cylinder turbo is able to deliver 115 hp and 250 Nm of maximum torque between 1,750 and 3,200 rpm, at the moment it is only available in conjunction with the six-speed manual transmission. The maximum speed is 187 km / h , while the 0-100 km / h shot is covered in 10.9 seconds .

Volkswagen T-Roc: how it goes

We had already had the opportunity to appreciate the qualities of the T-Roc during its international debut last year, appreciating its raised driving position and good brightness on board. Excellent front visibility, while visibility through the rear window, as often happens in the segment, makes it advisable to use the optional rearview camera (500 euros).

From the first few meters, two aspects are appreciated, the precise and progressive steering, in addition to the excellent road holding, albeit associated with a high capacity to filter road bumps. The agility has given by the readiness of the steering and the composite structure clearly recall the behavior on the road of the Golf, which has always been a reference point in the C segment.

Quality brought in dowry from the platform MQB, which allows the T-Roc to have a good light on the ground with a center of gravity not too raised from the ground, 16 cm, to the advantage of the ability to hold cornering and load transfers under braking.

The protagonist of the test is, however, the 1.6 TDI with 116 HP, which guarantees good acceleration using the torque starting from 1750 rpm and the weight of the car of 1320 kg dry. The linear supply is combined with an excellent passista behavior on the motorway, where you can also appreciate the considerable level of soundproofing.

Among the curves, although boasting a good elasticity, it is instead advisable to use a lot of gear, which is short, precise in the grafts and does not regret the automatic DSG very much. Content consumption, attested around 14 / l even after having squeezed the 1.6 TDI like a lemon.

The Euro 6D-Temp homologation protects it from the clouds that linger on diesel engines for a long time. The T-Roc is available in two versions: Style and Advanced. The Style entrance set-up is already very rich in terms of features and safety: 17 “alloy wheels, LED rear lights, fog lights, 8-inch Radio Composition Media, App-Connect, Front Assist with braking emergency and pedestrian recognition, fatigue detector, active Lane Assist, adaptive cruise control, Park Pilot front and rear parking sensors, rain sensor, manual air conditioning, electronically heated and adjustable rear-view mirrors. The top-of-the-range Advanced equipment adds respect to Style: Full LED headlamps, rear-lighted LED tail lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, glove bars, dual-zone automatic climate control and 11.7 ” Active Info Display with satellite navigator.
